RCEP was officially signed on November 15, 2020!
The full name of RCEP is the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. It was initiated by the 10 ASEAN countries and invited China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand to participate. It retains the eligibility for India to join. RCEP is the most important and largest free trade agreement in the Asia-Pacific region. It covers about 30% of the world's population and GDP. It is not negligible for both developed and developing countries to participate.
RCEP was proposed in response to the development of economic globalization and regional economic integration. Due to the hindrance of WTO negotiations to promote global free trade, and facing some negative effects of economic globalization, in order to be invincible in the world economy and have new development, it is necessary to strengthen regional economic integration. For this reason, some countries Implement "zero" tariffs, open markets to each other, and close cooperative relations to seek cooperative development. This is the relevant situation in which ASEAN proposes to establish RCEP.
The negotiation process of the agreement was very difficult. It lasted for eight years. The agreement began to be signed in 2012. At the end of August 2012, the ten ASEAN countries signed 5 free agreements with China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand. Australia and New Zealand are a free trade agreement signed with ASEAN.
The RCEP plan is for these 16 countries. The other two East Asia Summit member states (the United States and Russia) have not established free trade relations with ASEAN, so they are not within the scope of the RCEP member plan. ASEAN plans to wait for 16 countries to build RCEP to a certain level before discussing the accession of the United States and Russia.
The goal of RCEP is to eliminate internal trade barriers, create and improve a free investment environment, and expand service trade. It will also involve intellectual property protection, e-commerce, investment competition policies and other fields. The agreement will significantly reduce tariffs in 20 areas, and will eliminate tariffs on approximately 61% of ASEAN exports, 56% of Chinese goods, and 49% of South Korean exports.

China will have closer ties with the EU and other countries. China's major trading partners will further transfer to ASEAN, Japan, South Korea and other countries, and RCEP will also bring opportunities to enterprises.
